If the body produces too much uric acid or fails to excrete through the urine, crystals of monosodium urate form in the joints & tendons. These crystals cause inflammation leading to pain, swelling , redness, sometimes burning sensation of the joints also. Mostly start with the redness & swelling of the great toe. The pain generally aggravates in the mid night or early in the morning. The condition is also known as gout.
People are more prone to hyperuricemia or gout who have Obesity, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Heart and kidney diseases, take certain medication particularly for heart disease, poor diet, Women (age between 30 and 50 years), have Family history etc.
Symptoms of Gout/ Hyperuricemia includes-
- Intense joint pain
- Redness and swelling at joint
- Joint stiffness
- Limitation of range of motion
- Lingering discomfort
